    Frequently asked questions

    What's a good ACT score?

The ACT is scored 1–36. The national average is around 19–20. A score of 24+ puts you in the top 25%, 30+ in the top 5%, and 33+ in the top 1%. "Good" depends on your target schools β€” check each college's middle-50% range and aim for the upper end. For competitive universities (Ivy League, top 20), aim for 33–35.

How is the ACT different from the SAT?

The ACT has 4 required sections (English, Math, Reading, Science) plus optional Writing, while the SAT has 2 (Reading/Writing, Math). The ACT is faster-paced, fewer seconds per question, and includes a Science section the SAT lacks. ACT Math allows calculators throughout and covers some trigonometry. Both are accepted at all U.S. colleges; pick the one that fits your strengths.

How long should I study for the ACT?

Most students need 60–120 hours of focused prep over 2–4 months. A typical plan: 6–10 hours per week, including 1 full-length timed practice test weekly. If you're aiming for a 5+ point score jump, plan 4–6 months. Cramming in under 4 weeks rarely moves the needle more than 1–2 points.

Is the ACT Writing section required?

No. Writing is optional, and most colleges no longer require it. A handful of schools still recommend or require it (check each school's testing policy). If you're unsure where you'll apply, taking it once is a safe hedge. It doesn't affect your composite 1–36 score; it's reported separately on a 2–12 scale.

How do I improve my ACT Science score?

ACT Science is really a data-interpretation test, not a content test. Focus on reading graphs, tables, and experimental setups quickly, not memorizing biology or chemistry. Strategy: skim the passage, jump to the questions, and hunt for answers in the figures. Practice with timed passages (~5 min each) and learn to skip the conflicting-viewpoints passage if you're short on time. Most score gains come from pacing, not science knowledge.
